The largest rates of growth, though from a very small base number, will occur in the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. They illustrate a continuing steady growth in future years as the size of aged population increases, but that despite a high rate of growth older people with an intellectual disability will remain a very small subgroup of older people. The implications of these demographics are that the growth of older people with intellectual disability and their demands on support services are likely to be gradual and manageable rather than overwhelming.

This chapter will briefly consider the diverse groups of people with disability who are likely to be ageing with a disability, and then focus particularly on the largest group about whom most is known, people with intellectual disability. The size and characteristics of this group will be considered and a brief profile painted that provides a foundation explored further in the chapters that follow. The second part of the chapter turns to a consideration of views about ageing held both by people with intellectual disabilities themselves and service providers.

Stereotypical attitudes and discrimination The foregoing profile does not paint a positive picture of the potential for older adults with intellectual disabilities to have a high quality of life. It demonstrates, however, that this bleakness is not an inevitable part of ageing. Many of the more negative aspects of their lives do not stem from their inherent characteristics or the process of ageing per se but from age-related discriminatory societal attitudes and structures endemic in service systems.
