Yet the suggestion that consumers in a coherent market system share a touchstone symbolism of any sort is highly debatable: Even costly material assemblages variously could signify self-determination, overcompensation, militant resistance, class legitimization, deceitful affectation, or any number of things. The notion that objects can have a range of possible meanings is known as multivalence; that is, objects assume meanings drawn from a circumscribed range of symbolic possibilities (Perry and Paynter 1999; Tilley 1989; Wylie 1996:436–442).
