Later the Turks built a small mosque in the inner room of the Parthenon which was now open to the sky (Figure 16). A village had long since grown up around this monument. Sometimes the ancient temples were converted into churches and sometimes the blocks from their walls were reused to build houses, thereby often being moved far from their original location. The Propylaea had already been turned into a fortress by the Franks in the thirteenth century AD and walled up (Figure 7). The stones from the Temple of Athena Nike, for example, were reused in an outwork in front of a defensive tower on the south-west corner of the Classical entrance building.
